This idea has never been more evident than at Ausone, where the excellence of the wine production reflects Alain Vauthier's unflagging commitment to quality. He has been the estate's co-director for many years and its sole owner since 1997. While the origin of the vineyard's name has never been verified, everything suggests that it honours the memory of the Latin poet Ausonius, a former inhabitant of the region and a great wine lover. Ausone is the only Bordeaux Premier Cru Classé on a human scale (7 hectares) and benefits from the presence of porous underlying rock in close contact with the shallow roots of the vines on certain plots. This rock absorbs excess water and releases it during hot summers. This explains how Ausone emerged unscathed from the 1956 frost that destroyed 80% of the Gironde vineyards. This makes it one of the few Bordeaux vineyards with vines that are more than half a century old. Following years of mediocrity due to some confusion regarding the estate's direction, Alain Vauthier's appointment in 1974 signalled a return to excellence. As for La Chapelle d'Ausone, which is generally very successful, it joins the all-too-short list of great second wines.

Producer: Château Ausone

Region: Bordeaux, France

Grapes: Cabernet Franc, Merlot

Style: Red

Size: 6x75Cl
ABV: 14% / Fair

Sulfites: Low

Method: Natural / Low Intervention / Sustainable Agriculture
