Pauillac · Premier Grand Cru Classé since 1973

Château Mouton Rothschild

Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild bought Brane-Mouton in 1853 and gave it the family name; in 1855 it was classed a Second Growth. Baron Philippe de Rothschild took control in 1922, began château bottling in 1924 and in 1945 started the series of labels commissioned from a different artist each year. In 1973 Mouton was raised to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the only change ever made to the 1855 classification. Baroness Philippine succeeded in 1988; her children have run the estate since 2014, with Philippe Sereys de Rothschild as president. Philippe Dhalluin directed the wine from 2003 to 2020; Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy is director of winemaking since.

Eighty-three hectares in Pauillac: 81 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, 15 Merlot, 3 Cabernet Franc, 1 Petit Verdot, average vine age about fifty years. Fermentation in sixty-four oak vats; ageing 19 to 22 months in 100 per cent new barrels. Since 2000 the grand vin takes about half the crop, around 20,000 cases a year; Le Petit Mouton (from 1993) and the white Aile d'Argent (from 1991) take the rest.

The wine is sold en primeur through the Bordeaux négoce and traded thereafter by vintage and by label: the artist labels are collected in their own right, which keeps old vintages moving case by case. We hold full cases with documented provenance, in bond in France or in our Lisbon cellar, and source specific vintages and formats on request.
