Petrus
Pomerol · Moueix family since 1964

Petrus belonged to the Arnaud family from the eighteenth century. Madame Edmond Loubat bought into the estate from 1925 and owned it outright by 1945; Jean-Pierre Moueix, its distributor since 1943, bought his first shares in 1964 and became sole owner in 1969. The estate passed to his son Jean-François Moueix in 2003; a 20 per cent stake went to Alejandro Santo Domingo in 2018. Jean-Claude Berrouet made every vintage from 1964 to 2008, and his son Olivier Berrouet has made the wine since.
The vineyard is 11.4 hectares on the highest point of the Pomerol plateau, on a lens of dense blue clay found nowhere else in the appellation; five hectares came from Château Gazin in 1969. Since the end of 2010 the wine is 100 per cent Merlot. Fermentation is in concrete, ageing twelve to sixteen months in barrel with never more than half new oak, the barrels rinsed with water beforehand. There is no second wine. Production is about 30,000 bottles, some 2,500 cases.
The estate has no website, no visits and no public events; the wine is allocated through Clés Distribution and a short list of merchants, and once released it trades case by case. We hold full cases with documented provenance, in bond in France or in our Lisbon cellar, and source specific vintages and formats on request.
