In the land of France's - and the world's - most famous sparkling wine, there are still a handful of winemakers who produce dry white wines from the same grape varieties as the famous champagnes. This appellation d'origine contrôlée, granted in 1978, covers the entire geographical area where champagne can be produced. Bottles of this original style often bear the name of the village or commune from which they come.
Today's most famous dry white wine comes from the Bouzy Grand Cru, where Pinot Noir reigns supreme. There are also wines of this style made from Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and other more secretive grape varieties from the Champagne region. Like sparkling wines, coteaux-champenois are rarely vintage wines, but are made by blending wines from several harvests.
The production of these rare wines is still small, as the grapes are mainly used to make Champagne.
