Wine Advocate: 100/100

The prestigious Château Haut-Brion is remarkable for the number of times it has come first in various categories. Established in 1553 by Jean de Pontac, Château Haut-Brion was the first Bordeaux wine to be named after its estate, at a time when wine was sold anonymously.
It was the first château to implement techniques that have since become standard practice, such as racking and ageing in oak barrels. In 1855, it was the only grand cru classé in the Graves appellation, rising to the rank of... first. There has never been a poor vintage at Haut-Brion, which has been owned by the Dillon family since 1935. In 1983, the family bought La Mission Haut-Brion, which neighbours Haut-Brion. Comparing the estate's wines is always fascinating. In great vintages, it is capable of ageing for several decades. Vintages such as 1961 and 1989 demonstrate the incredible potential of Château Haut-Brion, which is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest red wines. The estate's second wine, formerly known as Bahans, has been called Clarence de Haut-Brion since 2007.
