The 2016 Petrus boasts an opaque purple-black colour and glides effortlessly from the glass, offering seductive notes of blood-red kirsch, warm black plums, blueberry compote, red roses, Ceylon tea, violets, dark chocolate-coated cherries, liquorice and cinnamon sticks. Hints of iron ore, pencil lead, unsmoked cigars and crushed stones can also be detected.
The palate is full-bodied, deep and uplifting. Layers of red and blue fruits, dense and beautifully fragrant, act as defibrillators, making the heart beat faster with each subtle flash of flowers and spices. These are perfectly framed by firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness, and the wine has incredible length, taking you to depths that extend to a provocative ferrous undercurrent. A breathtaking wine.
