Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family-run business that, at first, was dedicated to selling fine Douro wines and liqueurs. What is today the oldest family-owned wine company still operating in the municipality of Anadia, began to commercialise table wines from Bairrada in the 1930s, when the production of Port wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia was banned. At the end of the 1950s, one of the Bairrada region's most famous wine brands was born - ‘Frei João’ - and a little later the ‘Porta dos Cavaleiros’ brand2 from the demarcated Dão region.
