Caves São João, established in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel, and Albano Costa, is a family-owned winery that initially specialized in selling fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Following the 1930s ban on Port production outside Vila Nova de Gaia, the company pivoted to selling Bairrada table wines. In the late 1950s, Frei João, one of the most famous wine brands from the Bairrada region, was born. Soon after, they launched the Porta dos Cavaleiros brand in the demarcated Dão region. Today, Caves São João is the oldest family-run winery still operating in Anadia, maintaining a rich legacy in Portuguese winemaking.
