2021 Domaine du Clos de Tart 'Clos de Tart' Grand Cru
Clos de Tart was founded in 1865 in La Grange Saint-Pierre in the heart of Burgundy. The main building of the estate was an old stone house that once belonged to the Abbey of Cluny. In the 20th century, an enterprising winemaker, Jean-Marie Mommesen, successfully annexed the land and today produces some of the finest Grand Cru wines.
The Clos de Tar is located in the More St Denis area and extends over seven hectares. The Mommesen family acquired the estate in 1932 at auction and to this day the vineyard is still monopolised by the family. It is said that it rained that day, which meant that many potential buyers simply didn't turn up to bid.
Today, the estate is run by the fourth generation of the family and their holdings extend further and further into the Bougelles and Rhone Valley regions in search of the best terroir. However, the wines are still aged and bottled in the cellars of the Clos estate. In recent times, the Mommesen family decided to concentrate on creating high-end Clos de Tar wines and abandoned the production of mid-priced wines. In 1998 the equipment was renewed, the barriques were replaced and a new winery was built.
