They say that Madeira reveals itself not through subtlety, but through contrast. Nowhere is this more evident than in Duke of Clarence Malmsey by Blandy’s, a wine that represents the accessible, hedonistic side of Madeira while remaining anchored in tradition.
Blandy’s is one of the oldest continuously operating houses on the island, and this cuvée reflects a commercial style developed for consistency rather than rarity. Unlike vintage or canteiro-aged Madeira, Duke of Clarence is produced to deliver a recognizable profile — rich, sweet, and immediately expressive.
Made from Malvasia (Malmsey), the sweetest of Madeira’s classic grapes, the wine shows pronounced notes of caramel, raisins, toffee, and baked sugar, with underlying acidity providing structure. The sweetness is deliberate — this is not tension-driven Verdelho or Sercial, but a wine designed for approachability and immediate pleasure.
The condition of the bottle suggests standard commercial aging rather than extended cellaring. Label integrity, fill level, and capsule condition should be assessed visually, but in this category they do not carry the same weight as with older Madeira.
Unlike dry table wines, this bottle remains stable after opening and can be consumed over time without rapid degradation.
