Since 1975, the château has been producing magnificent wines, celebrated by wine lovers around the world. This is thanks to the dynamic leadership of Eric de Rothschild, and now his daughter Saskia, who has been at the helm since 2017. The plots are planted on well-drained clay-gravel soils and benefit from the influence of the Gironde estuary, which is ideal for producing this great wine. One of these plots is located in the commune of Saint-Estèphe and is home to the estate's oldest vines, which produce extraordinary grapes. After manual harvesting, the grapes are fermented separately in wooden, steel or cement vats depending on requirements. The temperature and regular pumping over are perfectly controlled throughout alcoholic fermentation. Fermentation lasts 22 days. The wines are then transferred to French oak barrels made on the estate. During ageing, each barrel is tasted to perfect the final blend. After this, the wines are aged for 15 months in oak barrels.
Lafite's grand vin is never the most demonstrative of Pauillac wines. However, it is its exceptional finesse that sets it apart and makes it worthy of its status as a Premier Grand Cru Classé, coming to the fore after 15 to 30 years of ageing. Endowed with fabulous aromatic complexity, it exudes a characteristic cedar aroma that makes it so prized by connoisseurs. Lafite's great vintages seem capable of defying the decades and never dying.
