In the early 2000s, Portugal produced some highly original wines. One of these was Quinta dos Cozinheiros, a winery founded by José Mendonça who dared to dream of doing things differently and making wines that would inspire a whole generation. Tragically, José died in a road accident in 2009, but his legacy lives on through the winemakers who once shared his dream and learned from him, such as Tiago Teles and António Marques da Cruz.
In 2015, the two winemakers joined forces and, with the family's permission, decided to rent the vineyard north of Lisbon, about 8 km from the coast, where José Mendonça had harvested grapes for Quinta dos Cozinheiros. Thus, COZ was born: a project seeking to produce wines that would be 'unadulterated and fresher than is usual for this country', using native varieties such as Baga (red) and Maria Gomes (white). However, Teles and Marques-da-Cruz's adventure did not stop there. They also bought two hectares in the Serra de Montejunto, about an hour from Lisbon, where they cultivate a 35-year-old vineyard on clay-limestone soils. They grow a rare white variety called Vital, which is only planted in the western regions of Portugal.
