The COZ project is a collaboration between Tiago Teles of Gilda and RAIZ, and António Marques da Cruz of Serradinha, who was featured in November's Direct Press for putting ladybirds on the corks. They joined forces to work the land of one of their winemaking heroes, José Mendonça of Quinta dos Cozinheiros, who died tragically. The name COZ comes from his winery. After a few vintages, they acquired more parcels in the Montejunto mountain range — a protected natural reserve dotted sporadically with vineyards, less than 10 miles from the ocean.
This wine is 100% Vital, sourced from five vineyards planted on clay and limestone in the Montejunto mountains at 250–300 metres above sea level. It was left on the skins for 24 hours before being pressed into concrete. It is refreshing with salty, savoury depth. There are notes of sun tea and dried orange peel, and the balance of acidity and texture is exciting and delicious.
