Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family-run winery which originally specialised in fine Douro wines and liqueurs. It is now the oldest family-run winery still operating in the municipality of Anadia. Following the ban on Port wine production outside Vila Nova de Gaia in the 1930s, the company shifted its focus to producing table wines from the Bairrada region. By the late 1950s, it had launched one of Bairrada's most renowned wine brands, Frei João, followed shortly thereafter by the Porta dos Cavaleiros label from the demarcated Dão region.
