Tubarão, a collaboration between Marcio Lopes and Ricardo Garrido, is dedicated to producing low-intervention wines that champion almost extinct forms of farming in Portugal, such as masseira.
Originating in the 18th century, masseira was pioneered by Benedictine monks in northern Portugal, close to the Atlantic coast. This agricultural practice involves digging large rectangular pits with sloping sides into the sandy dunes near the sea. Vines are planted on the sloping sides, known as "valos", to provide shelter from the wind, while the bottom of the masseira is used to grow a variety of fruits, vegetables and grains, creating a diverse polyculture. This arrangement resembles a greenhouse, with the depression creating a rich and warm microclimate, conducive to agricultural productivity. Through its wines, Tubarão wants to preserve and honour this historical agricultural method.
