When tasted blind, the 2012 Petrus revealed a bouquet of ripe raspberry and wild strawberry, with a fruit-forward character underpinned by aromas of graphite and forest floor. The wine seemed refined, discreet and even indifferent. The medium-bodied palate has a slightly savoury opening, as if there were a small drop of Cabernet Franc. The tannins are fine yet firm and the red fruits are infused with notes of cooked meat, black pepper and sage. I was expecting a fuller finish, though. This may evolve over time, but it remains a majestic Pomerol that will probably deserve a higher score with bottle ageing — hence the plus sign in the score.
