The fields of Póvoa de Varzim produce a remarkable Pét-Nat creation, a blend dominated by Vinhão and Loureiro grapes. Produced according to ancient sparkling techniques, it is characterised by a gentle effervescence and lively acidity. Our first dégorgement carefully removes the sediment from selected bottles, offering a bold twist for adventurous palates.
The Masseiras, located in Estela, Navais and Aguçadoura in Póvoa de Varzim, and Apúlia and Fão in Esposende, embody an exceptional agricultural practice. This method involves the creation of large rectangular depressions in the dunes. The vines that line the edges of these hollows act as a shield against the Atlantic winds. Remarkably, the central area contains fresh water rather than salt water. Despite the extensive arable land, the abundance of water and sargassum encourages growth. These shallow cavities form a controlled thermal refuge, complemented by the "valos" and the vine barrier, which resemble greenhouse conditions.
The valos were painstakingly built by hand in the 18th century by Benedictine monks from the Tibães Abbey, using surplus sand. Tubarão Pét-Nat comes from Atlantic sand soils and pays homage to a distinctive and almost forgotten agricultural heritage.
